Business Analyst

The Business Analyst (BA) / System Analyst analyzes the business needs of clients to help identify business problems and propose solutions. They serve as a liaison between the business and IT to analyze, communicate and validate requirements for changes to business processes, policies and information systems.

The BA understands business problems and opportunities in the context of the requirements and recommends solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.

Business Analysis is the process of analyzing and understanding organizations to craft solutions to the problems these organizations face. It can involve a wide range of activities including but not limited to:

  • Analyzing organization structures, policies and operations
  • Identifying an organization's problems and opportunities
  • Determining the needs of key stakeholders in the organization
  • Defining requirements based on the analysis of those needs
  • Managing the scope of the requirements
  • Assessing and validating potential problem solutions

Business analysis is an integral part of an IT project. Although business analysts in an IT project must understand IT solutions to be effective, they focus more on the business goals than the technical details of the IT solution. The ultimate goal of any IT project is to meet the overarching business goals. Business analysts allow IT projects to place the necessary emphasis on the needs, requirements and goals of the key project stakeholders.
