Database Engineer

The Database Engineer defines the tables, indexes, views, constraints, triggers, stored procedures, storage parameters, and other entities needed to store, retrieve, and delete persistent objects. The Database Engineer creates the logical and physical models of the data.

The Database Engineer typically possesses the following skills:

  • Database design
  • Database performance tuning
  • Database Administration
  • Understanding of the implementation language and environment

The most common databases in a web environment include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Database Engineering consists of designing, implementing, managing and maintaining databases, typically through the use of database management systems (DBMS). Creating an effective database system often requires extensive planning and understanding of the various databases and the DBMS which are used to manage them. Once the optimal database system is selected and the database has been created, the DBMS requires ongoing monitoring, management, troubleshooting and performance enhancements. Database engineers understand how to design, manage and tune databases such that they efficiently grow and change with the organizations which rely on them.
