Mid-America Transplant Services (MTS) is a not-for-profit organization that saves lives through excellence in organ and tissue donation. MTS uses several databases to coordinate all aspects of the organ recovery process. To more easily search the data, MTS needed all information housed in a single database. Based on previous partnerships, MTS enlisted the expertise of TDK Technologies to complete the migration of their legacy databases.

MTS is one of 58 federally designated Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) and is the first OPO to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for Performance Excellence (2015). As a facilitator and coordinator of the organ recovery process, it is essential to have the ability to search and obtain information quickly and efficiently. MTS needed to migrate several legacy databases to Hadoop / HDInsight running in Azure, which would provide an easy way to search all available data.

TDK developed automated Bash scripts running on a Linux management node to create and manage the HDInsight cluster in Azure. The SQL databases were migrated using a direct connection to SQL using JDBC drivers and Sqoop scripts to copy the tables to Hive. The FoxPro database tables were a challenge to migrate. TDK wrote PowerShell scripts to extract the data into CSV files and automatically create Sqoop scripts to manage the schemas of the Hive tables and copy the CSV data into those tables.

To provide an easy method to query the migrated databases, Solr search nodes were added. An Angular 2 web application was built to access the Solr Search service and provide data in the desired format.

TDK delivered MTS a solution to help them better serve donors, transplant recipients, and their families.
