Technology connectivity is a critical component in today’s business environment. So protecting your computer network from the myriad of malicious threats circulating on the Internet is a must. Anti-virus software scans files for computer viruses, and if found, the software will remove or quarantine the virus. Anti-virus products cover the spectrum in capabilities and subsequently price points. We’ll look at products for three distinct price points on the spectrum. These prices are based on initial purchases with a one-year subscription.

AVG Anti-Virus (free for personal use; around $40 per user for business use)
AVG makes a variety of anti-virus products. Like most free anti-virus products, its Free Edition (currently version 9.0) provides the most basic level of protection by scanning files for malware and verifying the websites you visit. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition may be used only on one computer for personal use.

Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Advanced ($60 per user)
If you’re looking to take the next step in anti-virus protection at a reasonable price, Trend Micro offers Worry-Free Business Security products. Worry-Free Advanced provides protection for PCs and servers. In addition to performing the malware scans discussed above, Worry-Free Advanced will scan Exchange Server for malware files in your email system. This product also includes spam filtering (for hosted email as well as Exchange Server) and the ability to restrict access to specific websites. And it has a console application to provide a central point for managing your protection. Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Advanced is a good solution for businesses with small computer networks.

Kaspersky Total Space Security (pricing available only through a sales rep)
Kaspersky’s Total Space Security offers a more comprehensive anti-virus solution for larger networks. Total Space Security protects the entire network from malware attacks, including email, web traffic and network interactions. Email and Internet traffic are scanned real-time. The product provides firewall protection on any type of network, allowing for better security when the Internet is accessed via Wi-Fi. Smartphones are included in the protection provided by Total Space Security; the software can even protect your data from being compromised if a smartphone is lost. Laptop settings allow you to delay scheduled scans to maximize battery life. Total Space Security is scalable to meet the needs of your growing network. Dashboard reporting is included to keep you up-to-date on the status of your systems. Kaspersky Total Space Security provides enterprise-level protection at a price a small business can afford.  It is worth the investment for businesses with an elaborate computer network and a strong dependency on network availability.

There are a multitude of anti-virus products on the market. As with any tool, it’s important, before you start shopping, to assess your needs. Prioritize your list of desired functionality, and do some research. With a little up-front effort, you will be able to find the right anti-virus solution for your organization.
